On a good day a wheel bearing has a lot of work to do.
They sit between either the wheel hub & spindle or the wheel hub & steering
knuckle. They are responsible for allowing the wheels to spin freely as well as
transfer cornering forces from the tire/wheel assembly to the vehicle. When
they fail, the most common problem is a grating or grinding sound, however
there can be a whole host of other problems to go along with it. On most new
models the bearing is part of a hub assembly which takes care of your ABS &
tire pressure monitoring systems. In most cases when the bearing fails it
takes out all of these other systems, which are critical to the safe
