Mounting winter tires on their own wheels costs a little more the first year and less every year after. There is no mounting and balancing charge twice a season, your summer tires and good alloys are not pulled on and off the rims twice a year, and the changeover becomes a wheel swap instead of a job that ties up a bay.
For winter, steel wheels are the sensible workhorse — cheap, tough, and easy to straighten if you find a pothole on a concession road. Winter-rated alloys cost more and look far better, and a proper winter finish handles road salt without pitting. Either way the point is the same: the wheels taking the salt and the potholes are not the ones you want to be looking at in July.
For winter alloys we mainly stock RWC, Replika, Fast Wheels, Mayhem, Touren and Braelin. Between them that covers replicas built to look like your factory wheels, styled sets if you would rather the winter car did not look like the summer one, and truck and SUV fitments. This is the part that catches people buying wheels online. A wheel that looks right in a photo can still be wrong for your vehicle, and by the time it arrives it is a return shipping problem rather than a five-minute fix. Before anything is ordered we check:
Almost every vehicle built since 2008 carries tire pressure sensors inside the wheels, which means a second set of wheels needs its own set of sensors. We fit Autel TPMS sensors, and in most cases we clone them — we read the ID out of your existing sensors and write it to the new ones, so as far as your vehicle is concerned nothing has changed.
That pays off twice a year. A cloned set needs no relearn procedure at changeover: the wheels go on, the dash stays dark, and you drive away. Sensors ordered online turn up blank and generic — the retailer has never seen your vehicle and cannot copy an ID they do not have, so you end up paying someone to program and relearn them anyway.
Alloy is lighter, which shows up as sharper steering and slightly shorter braking distances, and it is what most people want for looks. Steel is heavier and plainer but takes abuse well and costs less, which is why it is the default winter choice.
